POWERBOAT COURSES   12yrs - Adult

Powerboating has become ever more popular and the range and variety of craft ever more bewildering for a novice.  We have acquired an assortment of craft over the years to provide the very best opportunity for beginners and experienced drivers to improve their skills and awareness of the important safety issues associated with operating low and high speed craft in confined waters.  Below are a range of courses to provide skills for leisure, commercial and water sports instructors alike.

Private Lessons P2 or P4 £90 for 2hrs/ £170 for 4 hrs

These lessons can be booked for any level of powerboating but generally they provide an ideal chance to learn the basics of handling a motorboat.  If you have just bought a small motorboat, why not book a session and we will give you the confidence to operate in a busy harbour.

You can have up to 3 people for these lessons and we will supply an instructor and the craft of your choice. If there isn’t a convenient date then please call and we will arrange one to suit you.

Powerboat Level 1 Course. 1 Day £225 for up to 3 people

This course provides an introduction to boating techniques; launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer to everyday boat handling and the provision and use of safety equipment. The minimum age is 12 years and the course carries certification, however candidates under the age of 16 will be issued with an ‘endorsed’ certificate.

Powerboat Level 2 Course: 2 Days £235 per person/ £200 for groups 3+

This is The National Powerboat Certificate and our most popular course and provides you with the skills and background knowledge needed to become a competent powerboat driver.  The Bay, Island, two harbours and the opportunity to navigate between them make this a thoroughly demanding and enjoyable course.  If you can spare the time this is a ‘must do’.  This is also the ‘gateway’ for all the varied disciplines in the watersports industry including Canoe/Kayak umpire, Ski boat driver awards, Life Savers and Diveboat drivers.  We can point you in the right direction.

Successful candidates may apply for the International Certificate of Competence on completion of this course.  Then you can drive powerboats abroad. (a fee is payable on application unless you are an RYA member).

This course is the minimum level required for RYA and other watersports instructors.
Pre-course Ability: None. Minimum age 12. Candidates under the age of 16 will be issued an endorsed certificate.
Course Content: All you need to know for self-sufficient powerboating at a basic level. Course includes launching, mooring, anchoring and recovery plus all the boat driving skills required for basic competence in a powerboat.
Ability After Course: Self-sufficient powerboating in the right conditions: aware of own limitations and those of craft.

Safety Boat: 2 Days £215 per person/ £185 for groups 3+

Designed for those who use powerboats to provide support and safety cover for watersports such as sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. Ideal for Sailing Club volunteers and anybody wishing to improve their driving skills, It includes search and rescue techniques, different methods of recovery and towing of a variety of craft and of course, most importantly, the safe recovery of people.  elements of race management and mark laying are included.

This course is the minimum level required for RYA senior instructors.
Pre-course Ability: Completed Powerboat Level 2. Minimum age 16. Basic understanding of sailing boats.
Course Content: Boat handling, rescue techniques for sailing dinghies, windsurfers and canoes, including tows.
Ability After Course: Able to provide safety cover to a range of craft, particularly sailing or windsurfing.

Powerboat Intermediate Course: 2 Days £275 per person/ £245 for groups 3+

It takes one small click for you to start booking this brilliant course – It will be one giant leap in your boating skills and knowledge of navigation.  2 days of planning and adventure.  The havens of the Wash and North Norfolk are your playground and the  course covers both the theory and practice of pilotage and passage planning during the day on these beautiful coastal waters, using both traditional and electronic navigation techniques.
Pre-course Ability: Minimum age 16. Candidates should be competent to the standard of National Powerboat Certificate Level 2 with the coastal endorsement.
Course Content: A progression from Level 2, introducing pilotage, navigation and boat handling techniques for planning boasts on coastal waters by day.
Ability After Course: Able to plan and execute short coastal passages by day.

Powerboat Advanced Course: 2 Days £275 per person

With the acquisition of our Ribcraft Stormrider 7 metre Rib, which is fully coded to category 3, we are able to offer the Advanced powerboat course. This course is for leisure and professional boaters wanting to undertake more adventurous trips in small powerboats. Following the same format as the intermediate course but with the addition of night passage.  A chance to really see what it all looks like lit up, or not, as the case may be!   If you have the requisite skills listed below then you can go straight to this level.  Early booking is advisable as there is only one course scheduled.
Pre-course Ability: Minimum age 17. Candidates should be competent to NPC level 2 (coastal) with a knowledge of navigation and chartwork to the level of Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate.
Course Content: Includes pilotage, navigation and boat handling techniques for planing boats on coastal waters by day and night
Ability After Course: Able to plan and execute coastal trips including return to a familiar port by night.
