RYA Young Sailors Scheme Stage 1-2-3


Once off and running junior sailors are unstoppable, charging through the Junior stages and on to the heady heights of the National Sailing Scheme. Constantly under the watchful eye of our instructors, the junior course offers the perfect blend of fun and guidance to make sure every child in the group gets as much as possible from their time with us.


Junior Stage 1  

A complete introduction to dinghy sailing, this course covers all the basic skills needed to progress in the sport. Who knows you might be destined for Gold in London 2012!
Pre-course Ability: None.
Course Content: Launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat, basic sailing.
Ability After Course: Can steer and understand basic principles.

Junior Stage 2  

Having sailed through Stage 1, this course consolidates those skills and moves you on to the skills needed to sail alone in light winds.

Pre-course Ability: Knowledge to Stage 1.
Course Content: Basic Sailing Skills, ropework, collision avoidance.
Ability After Course: Can tack, control boat speed and understand basic principles.

Supervised Sailing  

An opportunity to improve your skills; gain time on the water, under instructor supervision. The minimum age is 10 and Stage 2 ability. This is a suitable alternative to the Young Mariner Refresher, as a means to improving your skill prior to booking a Stage 3 course.

Junior Stage 3  

This course covers all the necessary techniques to sail alone in stronger winds. At successful completion of this course you are a competent sailor. If you are 15 or older, you can hire our smaller craft under adult supervision

Pre-course Ability: Start Sailing Levels 1 and 2.
Course Content: Rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, capsize recovery, sailing theory.
Ability After Course: Can launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions.
